Why Humidity Matters for HVAC
Florida's climate is defined by heat and humidity. In Northeast Florida, relative humidity regularly exceeds 70 to 80 percent during summer months. Your air conditioning system is designed to remove both heat and moisture from your home — but when humidity levels are extreme, the system has to work harder to maintain comfortable conditions.
When an AC system runs short cycles — turning on and off frequently without completing a full cooling cycle — it removes heat but does not have enough run time to adequately dehumidify the air. The result is a home that feels cool but still clammy.
Signs Your Home Has a Humidity Problem
Common signs that humidity is not being managed well include condensation on windows or walls, a musty smell in certain rooms, wood floors or cabinets that feel sticky or show signs of warping, and a general feeling of discomfort even when the thermostat reads a normal temperature.
If your home consistently feels humid even when the AC is running, the issue may be with system sizing, refrigerant levels, airflow, or the age and condition of the equipment.
How Your AC System Removes Humidity
Air conditioning removes humidity through the evaporator coil. Warm, humid air passes over the cold coil, and moisture condenses on the coil surface and drains away. This process requires the system to run long enough for the coil to reach the right temperature and for meaningful dehumidification to occur.
An oversized system cools the air quickly but shuts off before completing the dehumidification cycle. An undersized system runs constantly but may struggle to keep up with both heat and moisture loads. Proper system sizing for your home's square footage, insulation, and layout is essential.
What You Can Do
Keeping your air filter clean is one of the simplest steps. A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, reducing the system's ability to remove moisture. Check your filter monthly during peak cooling season and replace it when it shows visible buildup.
Scheduling a maintenance visit allows a technician to check refrigerant levels, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, inspect the condensate drain line, and verify that the system is operating within its designed parameters. A system that is low on refrigerant or has a dirty coil will struggle with humidity even if it appears to be cooling.
If your home consistently has humidity problems despite a well-maintained system, a whole-home dehumidifier installed in the ductwork can supplement the AC's dehumidification capacity. This is particularly useful in homes with high occupancy, frequent door and window opening, or significant moisture sources.
