What Is a Mini Split System?

A mini split — also called a ductless system — consists of two main components: a compact indoor air handler mounted on the wall or ceiling, and an outdoor compressor unit. The two are connected by a small conduit that carries refrigerant lines, a power cable, and a condensate drain. Because there is no ductwork involved, installation is far less invasive than a traditional central system. A single outdoor unit can support one indoor handler or multiple handlers in different rooms, giving you precise control over each zone independently.

Benefits of Ductless Systems

Mini splits offer advantages that traditional ducted systems simply cannot match in certain situations.

No Ductwork Required

Installation requires only a small hole through the wall for the conduit — no tearing into ceilings or walls to run ducts.

Zoned Comfort

Each indoor unit operates independently. You control the temperature in each room or zone without affecting the rest of the home.

Flexible Placement

Indoor handlers can be wall-mounted, ceiling-recessed, or floor-mounted depending on the room layout and your preference.

Heats and Cools

Most mini split systems are heat pumps — they provide both cooling in summer and heating in winter from a single system.

Compact Footprint

The indoor unit is slim and unobtrusive. The outdoor unit is smaller than a traditional central AC condenser.

Good for Additions and Retrofits

When extending ductwork isn't practical or cost-effective, a mini split is often the right solution for the added space.

Where Mini Splits Work Best

Ductless systems are the right tool for specific situations. Here are the most common applications we install across Northeast Florida.

Garages

A converted or working garage has no duct connections. A mini split provides reliable cooling and heating without any ductwork modification to the main home.

Home Additions

Extending the existing duct system to a new addition is often impractical. A mini split serves the new space independently and keeps the main system balanced.

Sunrooms

Sunrooms gain and lose heat rapidly. A dedicated mini split lets you condition the space on demand without overworking the central system.

Home Offices

If your office runs warmer or cooler than the rest of the house, a mini split gives you independent control without affecting other rooms.

Older Homes Without Ductwork

Homes built before central air was standard often lack duct infrastructure. Mini splits deliver modern comfort without a full duct installation.

Bonus Rooms

Bonus rooms above garages or at the end of long duct runs are often the hardest to condition. A mini split solves the problem directly.
